How to choose your wedding cake
When it comes to choosing your wedding cake the task can be very daunting. With so many differing designs and a world full of possibilities, it can be difficult to narrow down the perfect cake for your wedding style.
If you are like so many other couples and have set up a Pinterest board for all aspects of your big day, the probability of you becoming overwhelmed and not having a clear vision for the overall theme can become a mind field. Too much choice can be worse than no choice at all, so how do you choose the perfect cake?
What are your priorities?
You may wonder why I am asking you this, but if the cake is honestly not a priority on the day why spend a lot of money on it. Take your budget and use it for something that will make you happy. For those of you who could not even consider a wedding without a cake, how big of a focal point will it be?
For most couples the cake marks the start of the evening reception where family and friends gather to watch your first shared task as a married couple. The cake cutting ceremony is a time-honoured tradition, with this in mind make sure that you coordinate with your wedding photographer. Making it more memorable by having a meaningful piece of music playing can evoke life long memories of your wedding day for you all.
Your Venue
Does your venue lend itself to a modern or more of a romantic feel? This can have a massive influence on the overall outcome of your wedding. Would a cake with a lot of texture and colour work well against a highly patterned wallpaper? Equally, would a pure white cake stand out as much as you would like in a white room. These are all things to consider when tying up the loose ends to your wedding and bringing it into one coherent design. When choosing your cake designer, it is wise to find out whether they have worked with your venue before, and if not, are they willing to research the property to advise you how best to design and set up your centrepiece to give it the perfect backdrop for both your photographs and for the wow factor that you are looking for.
Flavours
Now this is a tricky one. Are you looking to please everyone? Which is impossible, or are you wanting your cake to have your favourite flavours so that it is personal to you. There is no hard and fast rule here, but I would suggest choosing the flavours that are special to you. You have already chosen the menu for the wedding breakfast, which will be an everlasting memory and so should the flavours of your cake. Each tier can be a different flavour, so there will be plenty for your guests to choose from. If you have a specific flavour in mind, a good cake designer would do their utmost to accommodate and develop a recipe for you and incorporate that into your design.
Inspiration
With an ever-evolving world of cake design, inspiration for your cake can be taken from so many different aspects. It could be the flowers in your bouquet, an element on the bride’s dress, the texture of the paper used for your stationary, or it could be more personal. Your favourite piece of art, a memory from a past holiday, how you first met. Your cake can be your passport to have a bit of fun. The days of traditional plain white cakes with a few flowers have long gone, and this is your time to have that bespoke cake designed especially for you both.
Choosing the right supplier
There is definitely not a one size fits all when it comes to choosing your suppliers. Choosing a professional that you can both connect with and trust to deliver exactly what you have asked for is top priority. Of course, we all have a budget to work to, but one supplier cannot necessarily supply what another excels at. So, working out what the most important aspects of your day are and budgeting accordingly you will be able narrow down suppliers within your pricing bracket.
